Meet Melecio Galván: Master Mexican Draftsman

2025

Despite his remarkable talent, Mexican draftsman Melecio Galván (San Rafael, 1945–Chalco, 1982) remained little known during his lifetime. Rediscovered posthumously, in 1983 leading critics hailed him as “the most important draftsman in the country.” This bilingual edition, the first in English on his work, accompanies Meet Melecio Galván: The Secret Artist & His Mexican Contemporaries, his first U.S. museum exhibition. Essays by Maricela González Cruz Manjarrez and Vanessa Davidson situate Galván within Mexican art histories, while Rachel Mochon’s material analysis reveals his working methods through the marks, splotches, and scratches embedded in his drawings. A rare interview with his daughter and archive custodian, Amaranta Galván Jiménez, adds an intimate perspective. This volume fills an important gap in scholarship, but it is also a pleasure to read; its texts are scholarly yet accessible
